Todd has coached his debate teams to record-breaking successes:

• SIU became the first university in American history to finish in the “Final Four” of a National Championship Debate Tournament for nine consecutive years (2008-2016).

• SIU recorded more tournament wins—including four national championships—between 2007-2016 than any other debate program in the country.

Todd’s debate programs have recorded the following national championships:

• 1994 Overall Sweepstakes CEDA (Cross Examination Debate Association) National Championship

• 2008, 2013, and 2015 NPTE (National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence) National Championship

• 2013 and 2014 NPDA (National Parliamentary Debate Association) National Championship

Todd has been recognized with four “coach of the year” awards:

• 1995 Ross K. Smith National Debate Coach of the Year Award (presented by Emory University/South Carolina University/Wake Forest University)

• 2013 Debate Coach of the Year Award (presented by the Washburn Debating Union)

• 2015 Quintilian Lifetime Achievement Award (presented in 2015 by Point Loma Nazarene University)

• 2016 Debate Coach of the Year Award (presented by William Jewell College)
